Membership benefits...

Besides a reason to get together once a month with fabulous gals and chat about books, documentaries...okay and the occasional moments of US Weekly gossip, I think we are all finding that a great benefit of Book Club is new discoveries in books we perhaps wouldn't have chosen off the racks ourselves.

I am about 3/4 way through Peony in Love, after 6 days! I bring it to work to read at lunch and I find myself wanting to pick it up all day long if I could only find a way to not get busted for reading at work. Candice you are totally right it is a page turner love story that may be only the third book in my history to make me cry. For interest sake the other two were Time Travellers Wife and Ya Ya Sisterhood. On the Book Reporter website for Peony in Love it was such an interesting coincidence that the writer says that Peony in Love "evokes The 5 People You Meet in Heaven" ~ which Candice is reading. Also, the writer claims that Peony in Love takes over the top spot of the most beautiful love story they had read in 20 years, bumping my other fave "The Time Travellers Wife". This book is so good and beautifully written I am going to read it a second time immediately to capture any wonderful details I may have missed due to reading too fast in an attempt to find out what happens even sooner. WARNING ~ if you read the link to Peony in Love on the sidebar it may spoil an early twist in the book, but would definitely not spoil the story.

So two thumbs way up for Peony In Love...hope you all are enjoying your books as much as I am!

Meeting Notes...

I had such a great time at Book Club meeting on Friday! The book discussion changed my view a bit on Memory Keepers and I realized perhaps I was reading it at a pretty superficial level as there were a lot of issues and aspects brought up in your opinions that went a little deeper than I realized it might. Though I still won't consider re-reading at this point. It was also interesting how different our selections were for the exchange...to find out more about what everyone else is reading click on the links at the side bar.

Also thanks to Amber for following up on the question of what is a "scherenschnitte". See the side...

See you again on January 4th! Keep us posted with comments or quotes from your current read!

SEE YOU ON FRIDAY!

Hi Gals,

Come any time on Friday that you can get there. The earliest of us will be there at 5:00. They don't rush you through at Julio's so we'll just have appies and drinks while we wait!

Don't forget to wrap your book! We'll do Chinese Gift Exchange ~ draw numbers, unwrap the gifts, with the opportunity to steal. Which by the way I've learned has nothing to do with the Chinese since I asked my Chinese friend why it is called that and she was baffled. I was pretty embarrased. Either way we should all end up with a new proven great read to enjoy through the holidays.

Book Club and Bulldogs

Hi All,

BD started a raging inferno in the fireplace Sunday morning and my job for the day was to tend to it. This is how I plan to spend every Sunday this winter, there is something about sitting in front of a fire first thing in the morning that just melted away all ambitions for the entire day...but I digress... I made a lot of progress on this book over the weekend and finished it last night. Can't wait to find out what you all thought of it.

Does Julio's Barrio in Kensington work for Book Club meeting? Friday, November 23? We met here before for after work drinks a few months ago and it worked because it is central, but not a real Friday Post Work hot spot so we can easily eat, talk, and exchange our books. And then there is the Bulldogs...

If you have another spot you'd like to try, comment and let us know!

Book Club Meeting!

With only two weeks to our proposed Book Club meeting for the month, I guess it's time to start planning. I propose Friday, November 23, 6:00-9:00. Vote at the side if that time works for you.

This is a Christmas Book Exchange for our holiday reading material, so bring one of your all-time favourites wrapped!

David Duchovny is my new David Henry. I can totally picture him now, so thanks for the input! He was just a blank face in my book before.

How far along is everyone? Are you enjoying Memory Keepers? Let me know on the side bar! I have to say that I am not finding it to be a real page turner, though I do want to find out what happens in the end. I'm about two thirds in...
