One Thousand White Women

I've submitted our order for this next book with Chapters Online. Shelf price at Chapters and McNally Robinson is $21.95. With the online order, irewards discount and FREE shipping it works out to $15.85 for each book. I chose this book from my Sister-in-Law's favourites list. She is an avid reader and many of the books that made my favourites list were recommendations from her. I also thought it was a setting that I hadn't encountered in a novel before. Here's a little info on it...

One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man''s world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.

Can you beleive we are halfway through a Year's Worth of Books? Isn't it amazing how fast a month goes?! Probably even more so now that I always have a new book and get together with our fab club to look forward to. Here is a synopsis of where we've been...in my mind anyway.

1) Memory Keepers Daughter - Some liked it, or at least "understood" it's deeper meaning. I'm still angry about the nonchalant death of a main character.
2) Random Christmas Book - Great way to mix it up and I think everyone had a great book for the holidays.
3) Lullabies for Little Criminals - Gritty. I missed the meeting so I dont' really know all the opinions but I think it was a much enjoyed and discussed novel. Liked the Canadian authour. I have borrowed it out to a girl I know who is going to be an addictions counsellor so I'm anxious for her opinion as well.
4) Water for Elephants - This book made my favourites list. I thouroughly enjoyed it and I think everyone else did as well.
5) Love in the Time of Cholera - 2/8 finished it. Candace threw it across a room, I left my copy in Thailand. Enough said. Thank a lot Oprah...and Shannon. JK
6) Mommies Who Drink - TBD, but from what I am hearing it was a good one!!!

Black and Tan

So I've just spent an hour unsuccessfully trying to photoshop my face on to Cam's hot body. Turns out I can't even get it the easy way.

So next meeting is decided then, non? Just need a bar dodgy enough...first one that comes to mind is "The Trop". Any other ideas?

A picture says a thousand words...

Celebook Club

Hello Gals!
It's been a while since I posted. Truth be told I haven't had many post-worthy thoughts these days. Any one else feeling the last signs of winter draggin them down? Only one more day to wait until we see sunshine and 20 degrees on the plus side, should do wonders for my mood!

We have some celebs in our midst. Check out our very own Celebutants walking the Red Carpet at BLVD. Love.

So...Mommies Who Drink. I turned the last page this week and discovered my insightful questions I posted for you are all at the back of the book...hahaha I had to admit to myself that perhaps you all are right and that is where discussion questions belong. At the END of the book. I guess I just like a good spoiler, movies, books and reality shows alike. I have to know how they end. Back to the book ~ have to say I enjoyed it thouroughly and laughed more often than not. I thought it was just the right mix of funny and heart felt. Will save all other comment for meeting...but do let me know where you are at.

My extracurricular reading between books is Kabul Beauty School, courtesy of Malia. Click here to check it out. What else have you been reading? I've been reading W Magazine Online - check it out here. Great content for a online magazine. Found through http://www.laineygossip.com/ who I've also been enjoying on a daily basis. Again. Bored. At. Work. I think it's the work boredom that has numbed my mind to even conversation generating topics.

Any thoughts on next meeting? Any takers? Candace had a great suggestion to sit at the bar, order Black and Tans and shots, and call the bartender Mack. I'm all over that.

Check the side bar for info on our May selection ~ my pick. I went to pick it up at Chapters and they informed me that there were no copies in Calgary stores. Another option for a en masse order? Thoughts? I'm more than happy to order it up, shipping is free on these big orders.

Also, our renovations are o-v-e-r. Hallelujah.

'Till we meet again!

ps. For those of you who have heard me whining lately about the great decision of life - wether or not to cut my hair short...this picture from W magazine has made up my mind. So hot. I'm dialing up Heather for some highlights a la Cameron - stat!
