Something Old, Something New...

Hey all,
I went for a cruise through Chapters at lunch today. I have to say, there is not a lot out there catching my eye these days! There has been a lack of book related discussion and suggestions in my life. I am really looking forward to another year of books to read because I just wouldn't know what to pick up and I don't want reading to fall off my hobby list in favour of watching LOST (so awesome) and cross-stitching (got addicted after doing my neices).

Once I finish Middlesex (so good) I will be without a "next book" for the first time in a looong time! So here is my list of oldies I plan to turn to, and new ones that I might suggest for Book Club this year.

Oldies - The Zahir by Paulo Coelho, Book of Negros by Lawrence Hill, The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay
New - The Last Concubine by Lesley Downer, Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann

Has anyone suggested something fabulous to you lately? Seen anything on the shelves?

Book Club Recap

Big Thanks to Shannon for hosting Book Club on Friday!! Homemade bread and spaghetti sauce...so delicious. We just missed KD and Candice. Not to worry girls, we did relatively little discussion on Poisonwood and skipped over Cease to Blush pretty much.

Right now we are on Three Cups of Tea. How's that going for everyone?

Next time we get together we'll all be dancing up a storm at Alana and Mike's wedding! I can not wait to see this Bride walking down the aisle...and I'm very curious about the shoes?! I have not been back to the Ranche since our wedding so I'm sure I'll be flooded with wonderful memories. BD is working furiously hard to have our 1950 Chevy ready to drive to that special occasion.

So it's up to Jasmine and I to host the last two Book Clubs this year. You want to take October Jasmine? Let me know what you think.

Ta!

Reminders, Updates, and Previews Oh My!

Reminder - Movie Date Tomorrow!

Thursday September 10, Paramount Chinook. Movie time 7:10, meet at the top of the escalators 6:45-7:00. I have heard good things!

Updates - September Book - Three Cups of Tea

How is this book coming along for everyone? Reading or opting out?
If reading...are you enjoying?
If you are opting out...why?
I am the latter. This is just not the book for me this month. Perhaps another time, and I will be very curious to hear your opinions. It seems like I know many people who have read it - so why did none of them tell me it is so darned hard to read?

Previews - October Book - Middlesex

I know I should not be jumping ahead like this, but I picked it up and could not put it down. It is a juicy, somewhat sinister story. Fabulously written. I love all the characters and might make The Virgin Suicides, also by Jeffery Euginides, my pick for next year.
I love this book! Thanks for a new fave Kristin!

Hope you all are enjoying our Indian Summer. I love this time of year.

It's a Date(s)!

Long Awaited September Book Club

Where: Shannon's House
When: Friday, September 18 - 6:30-7:00
What: The Poisonwood Bible, Cease to Blush, and progress on Three Cups of Tea (which is not what any of us expected! WTF?)
Why: Because we all need wine, food, and camaraderie

Time Traveller's Wife Movie Date

Where: Chinook Paramount
When: Thursday, September 10 - 7:10
What: Tear Jerker Chick Flick
Why: You know your hubby, b-friend, date, won't watch this one with you. If he does, he'll make fun of your sobs and denounce the movie based on the fact that people can't time travel...BUT he'll beleive in X-Men or Zombie Strippers. Yeah, cause that makes sense.

A Letter and Thoughts

Dear Book Club,

I hope you have had a most awesome summer.

I miss you terribly.

Please let me see you soon.

Love,
C

Now some thoughts that will inspire our Book Club brains as the leaves get ready to turn. These thoughts are not random. They are most orderly.

1. September Book Club is in the works! Will post Monday with details.
2. The Poisonwood Bible for me started out lovely, then turned hated, and in the end I can say I liked it! I really really liked it!
3. Is any one reading Cease to Blush? Did anyone else think it was a crazy book? Like RANDOM?
4. I started early on Three Cups of Tea, got tired and left it.
5. I picked up Middlesex and WHOA, I love this book!
6. I got encouraging e-mail from well read Sister-in-Law that Three Cups of Tea I must not give up on, it will be worth it in the end.
7. I am back on Three Cups of Tea.
8. Next year I propose we do not A Years Worth of Books, rather 10 Months Worth of Books. Yes, Ladies. We take summer holiday July-August. To catch up on back books, or to read new faves, or just to stare at the clouds.
9. Next year I also propose we draw for months, rather than choose them way ahead. What you want to read in October could be very different than what you want to read in July.
10. Time Travellers Wife. Let's go have a good cry together, non? I hear that you'd better not wear mascara into that movie.

Thoughts on my thoughts? Lets hear 'em.

Friday Thought

We read books to find out who we are. What other people, real or imaginary, do and think and feel is an essential guide to our understanding of what we ourselves are and may become.- Ursula K. LeGuin

Ladies Nights

Movie Nights for Girls Only!

Here's a couple of movies that would be super fun to see together. Especially since I know that my husband is not into any of them!

1) Time Travelle's Wife
I know that it's almost here and we all talked about it before and sounded like we were all in agreement that we want to see it and we would all like to get together to see it. Opens on Friday and we've got book club next Friday... what do you ladies think about the end of August?? I like Eric Bana, especially after seeing Funny People

2) Lovely Bones (not out until December)
It's an Alice Sebold book that came before Almost Moon. I have to say that I really enjoyed this one. Not sure if any of you, besides Christine, have read it, but it's a good one, and Marky Mark is in it, so it should be pretty interesting. It's dark, but I don't think that it's as crazy whacked out as Almost Moon. Interest??

Can't wait to see you all next Friday. I've got the mother in law here for the next week. Have a great weekend all.. wait, it's only Wednesday. Agh... Back to watching SYTYCD Canada. I'm praying that Christine shows up on one of these auditions...
