I Miss Books

Hey ladies! This blog hasn't been updated in months. Also, we haven't picked a new book to read in about that long either. Super looking forward to Thursday. Although my main highlight about book club is still getting together with you ladies, I also miss the book picks. It's always interesting to see what somebody else might be wanting to read. And I usually end up reading a book I never would have picked out on my own. And I can't say that there were too many stinkers in the pile (we forgive you Shannon - lol). Anyways, hope this blog will get back to being in use. And hope that we'll continue with the club and continue with the reading. Love to you all!

New book

I can never remember what our new book is called. Something about the hotel on the corner of something and something else. I have yet to download it. I was hoping that I'd be able to get it from the library, but alas, they don't have it and I didn't request they bring it in, as I thought that I would be quicker to buy it on my Kobo. The Kobo has made it to the basement and that it all. I think I will go back and see if the library can get it for me. We'll see how long it takes them to get it in. Apparently you can rent books from the library for your eReaders and they'll stay for 3 weeks. I was also reading somewhere that you can lend books to your friends who have eReaders and as long as you are lending out too, then it's all good. Wish I could remember where I read that or how to do it.

I finally got to see The Help this week. I went with the Agbeyakah sisters. Definitely had to choke back tears at the end when May Mobley was pounding on the window yelling "No Abie, don't go". Good grief, why do they do that to you? Great movie. I definitely did notice that there were quite a few things missing (which is weird cause that movie was over two hours) but it was still great. Emma Stone was not as "old maid" as I pictured Skeeter to be. Look at me, a movie on a Wednesday night. Holy party...

The Help

New book ladies - and The Help was voted book for June. We plan to see the movie once we've read the book. That way those of you who are busy reading yoga books can still participate ;) Glad we've got something picked for this month. I tried to read Committed - no good. And then I've been struggling through What Remains. Ugh, either I just can't get into it, or it wasn't what I thought it was going to be or it's just bad. Or maybe all of the above. Either way, I'm excited to read a new book. Even though it took me 45 minutes to download it last night. Yeesh, this Kobo is supposed to make my life easier not more frustrating. Happy Reading!

Choose Your Own Adventure

Thank you Amber for a wonderful book club on Friday. Always a delicious dinner and always great conversation. Just to recap up the night:

1) We are all going to Vegas in April. Woot, woot. I cannot wait to start planning this with you ladies. It's going to be so much fun.

2) No book this month. Pick your own and we'll discuss when we meet up for the next book club. I am going to be reading What Remains. It's basically a Bessette/Kennedy memoir that was recommended to me. I'm excited to get stated on it.

3) Unfortunately it was our last book club with Candice. I'm sure she'll be making special appearances at times though. Maybe even through Skype!!

4) Jasmine looks fantastic. Props to her for her commitment!!!!!

5) Book club at my place next month (June). I'll check out some dates and send you all an e-mail to see what works best for everyone.

Movie Review, Another Chick Flick, and more...

Sup Book Club!

What'cha busy with? I have been thinking 'bout you all. I have a few things to discuss....

1. 3 of us for sure loved Two Kisses for Maddy...did everyone read this tear jerker? And since this is a movie busy post, who do you think would play Matt in the movie?

2. I saw Water for Elephants...it was just meh. I do not love R.Patz, thought he was hollow. And does Reece Witherspoon have a lisp? I didn't love her in it either. They just missed a ton of character development, as most books to movies do - just can not cram it in 2 hours. But the cinematography (? - is that the right word) was beautiful, it was a pretty, dark, movie setting.

3. Something Borrowed is coming out as well. This was a fun, beach, Chick Lit, book. I love Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson so I'll def see it, though probably not until it's out on Bell. And also, Jim from the Office. Good casting for a Rom-Com

4. Will you read this book? Jaycee Dugard is publishing a "tell all". She was the girl kidnapped at 11, and kept in tents in that psycho's backyard. She had his 2 children. I shudder thinking about it. I don't know if I want that information in my brain, it never does go away...but what has me curious about it is reading Room recently. I was wondering how much similarity there would be between the Mom in Room and what this Jaycee went through...I dunno...thoughts? He's getting 431 years in prison. Deserved.

Two Kisses for Maddy

I read this book in a day. Helped that I had it on the ipad ALL DAY at work (yeah, probably should have been working). Anyway, I just couldn't put it down. I'm wondering if it's because I am a Matt Logelin blog reader, or if someone who just picked it up with no prior knowledge of the story, would think it as fabulous. So READ IT and then let me know! I've started Bossypants and have been giggling at some of the jokes. It's quite funny. It's going to be my treadmill book this week. I'm 10 weeks late starting training for my 60km WALK in July. Gots to gets going. Good books help. Keep 'em coming. ARRRRRRRRIBA! Have a fab time in Mexico, Senoritas! Have uno mas shot of tequila for me. Por favor. C

Hey Y'all... 3 Thoughts I have today for my favourite people.

I want to read Two Kisses for Maddy. April 14 it comes out. I've been a Matt Logelin blog reader for a long time now and love his writing already. This one requires tissues. A.Des, I know you are with me on this one. We can cry together.

I want to read BossyPants by Tina Fey. Lainey says it's awesome. Do I trust Lainey? No. (Remember how she dissed the name Cash?) Do I get her sense of humor? Totally. Plus I really like Tina Fey...not girl crush like her...just, like her.

I want to see Water for Elephants (click here for our blog thoughts on this book from ages ago) even though a fan of R.Patts and Reece Witherspoon, I am not. (I talk like Yoda, don't I) SInce we are all busy and important people, I'm just going to throw out there that we all go see it Tuesday, April 26 at Chinook Centre. Or matinee styles on Saturday, April 30. Do I have someone to share a popcorn with on either of those dates? I like extra butter!!!!

Thanks Shannon for a truly gourmet Book Club feast! You outdid yourself. Just so we can all remember it was salmon (with butter sauce), quiche, brocolli (with cheese sauce - need that recipe), and yummy lemon risotto/rice. Also the bread and dippers and of course the sticky toffee pudding for dessert! Soooo good.

Vote was for Left to Tell, a story about a Rwanadan holocaust survivor. I hope that it is equal parts informative and inspiring!

Unbearable Lightness

I loved this book. I had not planned to read it because I thought how could I read that many pages about bingeing and purging...but in the end I found it fascinating! Two things in particular jumped out at me in the epilogue that I thought I needed to remember. The first was her comment about how she never sees overweight people out walking their dogs, but lots of people overweight walking on treadmills in the gym. Tha makes so much sense to me not only because I attribute a lot of my weight loss to Patch's puppy dog eyes begging me to walk him every day, but that we reap so much benefit out of life from doing what we truly enjoy. When I walk patch I almost always have a friendly interaction with another person, I meet neighbors, I get a bouncy happy dog who is so grateful and excited, fresh air, and enjoy the beautiful scenery in the downtown parks. On the treadmill at the gym it's just the whirr of machines, people plugged into iPods, and smell of sweat. Gross. I will remember this post next time I consider a gym membership

The last thing I loved from this book was the quote, I think it's on the very last page. That "true nobility isn't about being better than anyone else; it's about being better than you used to be." I just love that.

Coming to you live from the new iPad! Loving this thing. Sad there were NO posts in December! I think a first in our 3.5 years!
Catching up, we all loved Room. Had another wickedly delicious meal at Casa del Bauer. Decided to read Unbearable Lightness by Portia de Rossi (how hilarious she made that up. Seriously? I think I'm going to go by Princess Beyonce Buttercup again) also we have homework to do a daytrip from Calgary. This months meeting is delayed due to the most brutal winter of sickness that I can ever remember! Hopefully we are all well enough to get together soon, and Amber,s delicious Indian meal is spicy enough to knock any remaining colds out of us. Are you being productive with this extra time to read? I'm multitasking Unbearable Lightness and Secret Daughter. This year my resolution is to Focus and do one thing at a time, but I have to say I after a slow start to Secret Daughter, I am having a hard time putting both down!
Reading on the iPad is AWESOME. Any one else out there loving the switch to paperless? Gotta say, didn't think that I would!
Lastly, I'm doing the Happiness Project month-to-month this year. Any one want to join me?

It is only 9:14 and I am already home from Book Club, blogging about Book Club. Thanks Baby Cash. I am super excited that our new book is Room by Emma Donoghue. I am also super excited that we have our new year set out, as well as an extracurricular trip to Canmore coming up in a few weeks! Squeee! Don't forget to send me here, or on FB, or on e-mail the times of your spa treatments so we can map out times for coffees, shopping, hot tubs and when to head back to the condo for eating, drinking, more eating, and more drinking.

Book Club Turns Three!

Alright ladies. Big night. Book club turns three, meaning we are entering our 4th year of book club together. Good work. Not a lot of book clubs stay together this long. And I'm proud to say that not only are we meeting once a week for wine and chats, we're actually reading books. Hello All!

Wow, been a long time since I've put thoughts to this blogger screen. How I have missed it!! Now I have many more opportunities in a day to blog, read, nap, have a coffee and watch the weather network...oh the simple pleasures!!! I'm going to try to keep up better with this blog, and perhaps my own personal one. I have so many questions for you all that I often don't get to ask at our meetings. For example, what do you all think of the electronic reading devices...the kindle and the ipad? Are we all hard copy page turners, or would any of you be putting one on your Christmas list?

I am happy that you all chose Sarah's Key. It is the one that I have wanted to read. Both my MIL and SIL have read this book. Mary did say that her book club had mixed reviews so I'm curious what we will think. It is a Heather's Pick, which is almost always a guarantee for me. Hope you like it.

I am 5 for 8 of our books this year, and since Sarah's Key is shaping up to be a quick read for me I am going to go back and try to finish Unfeeling, Shadow of the Wind, and The Slap.

Next meeting looks to be at Amba's house. I do love Amba's Picks.

Little Bee is my pick. So happy that it was a unanimous vote. I know that I only gave you two to choose from, but I've had my eye on this book for months and was really looking forward to reading it. It's going to be a quick read I think. Pretty short book too. I hope that you all get a chance to pick it up and to read it. I miss having genuine book conversations with you ladies. Although all our conversations are great.

Thanks for all coming last night, and for not going into labour in the middle of dinner Candice. I'm looking forward to Alana's party on Saturday. I love summer. We get to see so much more of each other. I also think that we should seriously think about Amber's suggestion about "Vacation Club". That would be grand to spend a week away with you ladies.

Unfeeling...

Is the book that we are reading for June. Candice's pick, our vote. I picked it up a few weeks ago, and finally started reading it the other night. I'm only through the first few chapters, but it's got my attention. Seems to be an easy read, which is what I need right now. I'm excited to be back into a book. I put The Happiness Project aside, as I couldn't get back into it to finish it. At least it's a book that you can put down and pick back up again whenever you want. I'm still putting together a time for July's book club meeting at my place. I haven't heard back from Candice, Amber or Jasmine, but it's looking like I might be booking it for the last week of July. Speak up if that week doesn't work for you.

Are You Feeling Happier?

I'm on page 204 of The Happiness Project and am really enjoying this one. I've take a few of Gretchen's tips and have already implemented them into my life. Things like:

1. Buy a fancy paper organizer and label it year Baby - 7 to collect all of the papers and pictures that I'd like wee Bauer to have one day. It cost me all of $15 bucks and I already have some items in it.

2. Give my in-laws a break. They are who they are and aren't going to change just because I think they're whacked. I've promised to appreciate who they are and that they've given me a wonderful husband.

3. Remember to be Candice. I love gardening, cutting grass, baking, cooking, antique shopping, relaxing in the sun, chocolate, pretty things, being alone sometimes and country music.

I can't wait to hear about what you all took away from this book.

Next book club is June 3rd at Ranchero Bauer. I'll be home at 4:30 so come on over whenever you can maneuver the traffic. I'll be cooking up healthy grub since we're all watching something these days....for me, it's getting bigger. Aha. Actually, the doc has me off sugar so I'm really no fun either. Gestational diabetes kind of sucks yall.

Hey ladies!!

Thanks for the marvelous book club night last night Amber. Always so much fun to get together with all of you. I'm not as "post savy" as Christine, but I thought that I would just write a quick note with our book club pick for May. In a 5 - 1 vote, we will be reading The Happiness Project. I'm very excited to get into this book (and to save Little Bee for my pick, ha ha).

So the next book club meeting will be held at Candice's. Just a suggestion for dates, but if we do that one at the end of May, then I can hold June's in the middle of June, and we'll be back on track for dates. Yes..??? Let me know what works for who and when and where and all that.

Hey all,

Thanks Jas for an awesome Wednesday night Book Club. Gourmet grilled cheese and tomato soup was delicious! Good cookies too. I'll get to posting my cookie recipe one of these days soon.

The unanimous vote for the next book to read is The Slap! Originally put up by Kristin to read a month back. I'm excited to read this one as I've already picked it up and the first chapter I read was very entertaining.

We didn't finish the topic of next meeting...Amber...what works for you for hosting? Should we squeeze one in in the next few weeks end of April/early May? Up to you lady!

March book club meeting held in April!

Okay the votes are in - most of voted and we will be holding book club at my (Jasmine's) house on Wednesday April 14th at 6:00. What do you think of homemade tomato soup and fancy grilled cheese sandwhich and cookies? Does anyone hate this idea? I have heard of some people hating tomatoe's but I find this unbelievable!

I haven't started Shadow, and I am not sure yet if I am going to. I have finished Wicked and I liked it alot. I give it a 7 (out of 50). I am a very discerning reader.

Should we vote on a new book or as Shannon suggested should this be catch up month or book of your own choice month? I really do want to read "The Slap". One of the reccomends by Kristin at February's book club.

I've Lost My Chutzpah

I'm kinda feeling like this during the day.

Which leads me to this at night.

I can't seem to get back into it ladies. Shadow of the Wind is a highly recommended book with tons of wonderful feedback and I just can't pick it up. I'm at chapter two and haven't the least bit of need to read right now.

I guess maybe there are too many other things going on right now for me. Reno's in the basement, visits from family, baby shopping, knitting and HELLO - it's spring which means there are hours of planning to do for the yard and garden. Feeling a little antsy that I won't finish anything in time.

Maybe I just need a break from reading a book a month. The pressure to get a book done so fast right now is daunting and then I just don't pick it up at all.

I say that and then I'm extremely sad because I know that if I step down from this wonderful book club, I won't see you lovelies anymore. However; taking a spot when I'm not in the reading mood is not going to benefit the group either.

Am I super shitty for thinking of stepping down? Does anyone even still read this blog?

February but really March Book

I hear the brunch at Miss Horne's was absolutely delicious! Sad that I missed it. I wanted to post the new book for y'all just in case some have forgotten.

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

I am definitely looking forward to picking this one up. I truly missed reading wicked and had I known then what I know now, I would have bought it right after the trip and breezed through it.

I'll pop out today and pick this baby up. I'm told that some/most of you are going to try to finish reading Wicked because it's so very good!

We're off to Edmonton this weekend for our nephew's 3rd birthday party. Can't believe that he's already 3! Love this little guy. He is the reason that Chris changed his mind about having a family so I'm going to pick him up something extra special today. Like chocolate and jelly beans special!

What are you all up to for the weekend? It's been so gorgeous out. I don't know about you but I feel WAY better when I drive to work and home in the light! For me, that's definitely a sign of spring.

Beach Reading

K - Speaking of horror. I couldn't find Wicked before I left on vacation. I scoured 3 different airports with no luck.

I did however, find 3 excellent reads that I'd like to recommend. I was able to focus my extra time on reading and I loved every minute of it.

The first book that I cracked was Bird in Hand. A VERY easy read with a pretty decent story line. I breezed through it because it was the perfect beach read in every way. No dip in the ocean made me forget the storyline and I easily came back to it after a day out and about. What I didn't like was there was no real depth to it. No part that made me really think. I'm rating this book a 3.5 out of 5.

The second book that I had along was Lucky by the one and only Alice Sebold. After reading Lovely Bones and Almost Moon, I needed to go farther with Miss Alice and read her life memoir. While still chilling, I found Lucky a much easier read compared to Almost Moon. Lovely Bones didn't bother me either so I'd be interested to hear which of the three you all thought was the darkest. I LOVED this one and rate is a very strong 4.5 out of 5.

My last book was Still Alice by Lisa Genova. I picked this one up on a whim after not loving Guernsey Potato. I couldn't have been happier with this pick. Wow. I saved the very best until last. I love how that happens. It drew me in and kept me there well until the last page. Like Alice in this book, Chris's grandmother Alice suffers from Dementia and Alzheimer's disease. I wonder if that link made this book even better for me. I loved how it was written from her perspective, often re-living events over again just as an Alzheimer's patient would. It made me laugh and made me cry. I found myself telling Chris about the book even when he stopped listening. WOW.

5 out of 5. It could possibly be my new favorite book.

I finished Still Alice with 3 days left to go on our vacation. I didn't have a backup so I picked up a trashy mystery novel in a grocery store in Barbados. I can't remember the title, but I must finish it. It's actually pretty good. I was really hesitant on buying it but I just couldn't go 3 full beach days and 2 flights without a book.

Thanks Kristin for a fab Book Club last night! My favourite thing is when all 8 of us are in attendance. More laughter, outrageousness, and stimulating conversation. Of course, could not go without mention the perogie casserole courtesy of K. Shew. So delicious I've told 2 people about what I ate for dinner last night, and it's only 9:00am. Soul food. Mmmmm...

General consensus is that The Outlander was a good book...receiving a 4/5, 3/5, and of course 4/100...

I JUST finished the Outlander, and even though it was a tough start, I really liked this book. Enjoyed the whole Frank slide business and Bonny. Happy New Year! Hope you all had a fabulous one. I think this year will be eventful for our little Book Club. I'm excited to share all the ups and downs with all of you.

How was your Holiday reading? Thoughts on Outlander? This book started out wonderfully for me and I perhaps made what I now consider to be a cardinal reading sin - I broke pace with Outlander (so not to finish so fast) and picked up Book of Negroes. Well, Book of Negroes was such a good read to me that Outlander lost it's sparkle. I have really struggled to get back into it.

Up next this month is a pick from Kristin, or we could call her Kalikine Kekileki, the fab girl who brought us Middlesex and Choke. What will she pick next??

Merry Christmas Book Club

I'm taking my book along with me. I read some more last night and it has gotten better. I'm sure that the steamy sex scenes had something to do with it.

First Impressions...

I know some of you aren't starting the book yet because you don't want to be done too far in advance of the meeting, or perhaps haven't had the chance to pick it up yet. But I thought I'd give you my two cents anyway.

I love this book.

That's all.

At current rate of page turning I should be done by the time the Venza wheels into Dunham Cabin, Montana. That's okay though...I am going to finally get my hands on Book of Negroes this Christmas as well.

P.S. In the movie screen that is my head, this is what William and Mary look like. Yes, it's always Legends of the Fall. That kinda, sorta, might be my favourite movie and I didn't even realize it.

I think this will be a great Christmas read. I did a little more looking online about it and it seems like it might be reminiscent of The Birth House (1900's young heroine) and One Thousand White Women (again, Wild West and young heroine). Two books I thoroughly enjoyed.

The chase in this book takes place across Southern Alberta Crowsnest Pass area, and at some point ventures into Frank, Alberta. Didn't we all take a field trip there as kids? This should be some interesting local historical fiction, which I always am excited about.

Book Club Week!

Hello ladies,

It is Book Club week! We are still on for Thursday, December 10th at Alana's? Can't wait to find out what we'll be reading...squeee!

I had to look back and see that it was April 3 that we last gathered at the Coldwell's...(then the Bray/Coldwell's). Seems like a lifetime ago! I do enjoy how I can reflect on how life was by the memories of our monthly get togethers.

We watched Choke (so weird that one)...

Jasmine was all bubbly...ha ha...

I was upset and worried I might be pregant (I wasn't) ...

Alana was tipsy and wanted to Britney dance party while Mike fought her on the song selection, but in that cute way guys have of egging her on and poking fun at her at the same time.

Kristin was off to Thailand with Kyle and posted her nervousness about how they'd travel together and if they'd still like each other at the end...turns out those were needless worries, weren't they?

Here is an article I found on Reading Group Guides on how to choose a book for book club. Thought you might find it interesting! It's wordy...so I bolded in case you like to skim.

Choosing What to Read
One of the most enjoyable yet frightening aspects of a reading group is choosing the books. While it's exciting to consider the options, make your list and winnow it down to those few select titles that you'll read each year, picking good books for your group can also be intimidating. You want the perfect book: one that's not too easy, not too hard, that will hold the interest of a diverse group of readers and will also inspire a lively discussion. Where on earth do you find books that are all that and more, and how do you pick which of these to read?
Probably the best place to start looking for titles is your own members' bookshelves. Some groups insist that those proposing a book have read it and can testify to its worthiness for the group. Other groups would rather that no one have read the book, making it a surprise for everyone; they choose books based on word of mouth from outside sources, reviews, or dust jacket blurbs. Is there a title that many of you have always wanted to read? A classic that some of you would like to revisit or have never quite gotten to? An old favorite that you'd love to share with your group?
Are you looking for something a little different? Outside your normal reading curve? Try searching this site for a good book. All the books listed here have reading guides that can enhance your group's discussion. Many publishers specialize in certain types of books, either by genre or literary style. If you find a book you like, search the publisher's site for similar titles. Try reading several works by one author or on the same topic. Or compare two books set in the same time period or focusing on related topics. Some reading groups even have themes, such as 19th century literature, science fiction, or women authors. I'm hoping you all can make it! Right now we will be missing Amber, I'm in the hopes your other plans just might change!

Since it is a Book Club Birthday I will be serving up a light meal followed by a ferocious dessert.

Now for the best part...

I am giving you a preview to my picks for November!

I'll have all 3 at Book Club to get a palpable feel for them, I know sometimes that makes a difference. I'd be equally happy with any of them, so I am excited to see what you choose. When I walked them up to the till the cashier said to me "These are really good books!"

Here is a quick summary of why I chose the ones I did.

The first book is by the same author as one of my all-time faves. (Thanks Malia for the tip on this one!) It is her second novel and came recommended by Chapters Online to those who loved Time Travellers Wife, Lovely Bones, and The Thirteenth Tale. I did love all of those! It is a hardcover, 401 pages, big typeface, roomy pages with big margins. I see myself reading this in front of the fireplace and loving it.

The second book is by another popular author who I've been drawn to for a couple years but haven't had the chance to read yet. His most popular book, The Alchemist, I thought one of us must have read by now, so I chose another one. This book also came recommended by Mary, who I think most of you know. She hasn't led me astray yet on a book recommendation. The book is subtitled "A Novel of Obsession" which got me, and also a beautiful cover which gets me too.

The third book is a classic and timeless. I have wanted to read this book since my sister had to read it in High School. I think it will be inspiring and educational.

All Work and No Play

I've been sick for 4 weeks and I finally went to my doctor on Tuesday. He gave me a stern talking to and told me that I had a pretty serious infection and put me on some fantastic drugs. He told me that I wasn't able to drive on these drugs (they are THAT good) so was to stay home from work for 3 days. (The truth is, I didn't have time to go to the doctor. Work was just too busy.)

Of course instead of just taking the time to get better, I decided to "work from home". Why did I do that!? I'm an admitted recovering workaholic who really tries to focus on life, friends and family rather than work.

These three days, when I'm not making cookies, buns or muffins, I'm reading Middlesex. I love the story and am finding that I'm breezing through it. Great pick Kristin!

One paragraph that resonated with me is this:

Historical fact: people stopped being human in 1913. That was the year Henry Ford put his cars on rollers and made his workers adopt the speed of the assembly line. At first, workers rebelled. They quit in droves, unable to accustom their bodies to the new pace of the age. Since then, however, the adaptation has been passed down. We've all inherited it to some degree, so that we plug right into joysticks and remotes, to repetitive motions of a hundred kinds.

Do you find that you are doing more than ever to get by? Working twice as hard for the same pay back? Doing two people's jobs and making the same money?

A New Year of Books

Thanks Jasmine for a great Book Club last night! I am anxiously awaiting a Wok Box to open downtown. Malia was the only one who read Three Cups of Tea and gave a good review. I think that this is one a few of us will revisit.

There was some discussion on changes to our format for the new year. I love that we are a flexible bunch. Along with changes, there are some new rules.

2009-2010 Book Club Rules
1. You don't talk about Book Club.
2. You don't talk about Book Club.
3. Everyone must read all books - no excuses
4. 100% Attendance is mandatory - no excuses
5. Maximum page length for books is 300 pages
6. No font size smaller than 11
7. Summer month books must be light and fluffy
8. If your choice of book is junk - you will be expelled from Book Club
9. Host must provide detailed presentation, discussion questions, and moderate the meeting
10. Host must provide copies at the meeting for all 8 members of their 3 potential Book Club picks.

A change this year is we drew names for months, instead of books. You will host a meeting somewhere near the beginning of your month and present 3 books that you would like to read that month. Then we will take a vote on what will be the book for the month. This will prevent us from reading ahead and we will all be on the same page this year (no pun intended).

By random draw...here is the order for the year!

Okay, so I was just joking about the rules. But I think this new format will work really good!

If you are going on some fabulous vacation, or have some wicked cold, and can't host your meeting in that month we can always go out on the town somewhere new and exciting that time.

Also NO pressure to put on a dinner feast. Appies, take-out, or even just cheese and crackers is great. I don't get to host dinner parties ever, so I like to test out new menus on Book Club...but absolutley no expectations.

I am also excited to present 3 books and have input from the group on what they'd like to read. I think this will eliminate books that someone has already read. Extra incentive to come to the meeting to get in on the vote!

All that being said...the first meeting of the new year is at my house - Friday, November 6! I'm off to Coles at lunch to do some book shopping! We'll be discussing Middlesex at this meeting too.

So the last I heard we were meeting at Jasmine's next Thursday? Is that still a go? I think that I'm the only one who read Three of Tea (long but intriguing). I wouldn't mind chatting about Cease to Blush too, cause that was interesting, and I think that we'll have a few different takes on it. Then October's book is Middlesex! I haven't quite started, cause I haven't totally finished TCOT yet. Should we show up at Jasmine's with book choices for next year, or do we wait until we're done this years reads first?? I think that last year 12 books got picked plus the Christmas exchange. Jasmine suggested that we do 6 months at a time. So we're kind of breaking it up, but at the same time there are books there for those of us who like to read ahead at times. I like that idea. I say that we pick names for the year, but only books for the 6 months. This'll be a record month for us getting together. Alana's wedding (which was a super blast), book club next week, Candice's end of renovation party and the 8th annual pumpkin carving party! What is this, our lucky month??

Hey all,
I went for a cruise through Chapters at lunch today. I have to say, there is not a lot out there catching my eye these days! There has been a lack of book related discussion and suggestions in my life. I am really looking forward to another year of books to read because I just wouldn't know what to pick up and I don't want reading to fall off my hobby list in favour of watching LOST (so awesome) and cross-stitching (got addicted after doing my neices).

Once I finish Middlesex (so good) I will be without a "next book" for the first time in a looong time! So here is my list of oldies I plan to turn to, and new ones that I might suggest for Book Club this year.

Big Thanks to Shannon for hosting Book Club on Friday!! Homemade bread and spaghetti sauce...so delicious. We just missed KD and Candice. Not to worry girls, we did relatively little discussion on Poisonwood and skipped over Cease to Blush pretty much.

Right now we are on Three Cups of Tea. How's that going for everyone?

Next time we get together we'll all be dancing up a storm at Alana and Mike's wedding! I can not wait to see this Bride walking down the aisle...and I'm very curious about the shoes?! I have not been back to the Ranche since our wedding so I'm sure I'll be flooded with wonderful memories. BD is working furiously hard to have our 1950 Chevy ready to drive to that special occasion.

Now some thoughts that will inspire our Book Club brains as the leaves get ready to turn. These thoughts are not random. They are most orderly.

1. September Book Club is in the works! Will post Monday with details.
2. The Poisonwood Bible for me started out lovely, then turned hated, and in the end I can say I liked it! I really really liked it!
3. Is any one reading Cease to Blush? Did anyone else think it was a crazy book? Like RANDOM?
4. I started early on Three Cups of Tea, got tired and left it.
5. I picked up Middlesex and WHOA, I love this book!
6. I got encouraging e-mail from well read Sister-in-Law that Three Cups of Tea I must not give up on, it will be worth it in the end.
7. I am back on Three Cups of Tea.
8. Next year I propose we do not A Years Worth of Books, rather 10 Months Worth of Books. Yes, Ladies. We take summer holiday July-August. To catch up on back books, or to read new faves, or just to stare at the clouds.
9. Next year I also propose we draw for months, rather than choose them way ahead. What you want to read in October could be very different than what you want to read in July.
10. Time Travellers Wife. Let's go have a good cry together, non? I hear that you'd better not wear mascara into that movie.

1) Time Travelle's Wife
I know that it's almost here and we all talked about it before and sounded like we were all in agreement that we want to see it and we would all like to get together to see it. Opens on Friday and we've got book club next Friday... what do you ladies think about the end of August?? I like Eric Bana, especially after seeing Funny People

2) Lovely Bones (not out until December)
It's an Alice Sebold book that came before Almost Moon. I have to say that I really enjoyed this one. Not sure if any of you, besides Christine, have read it, but it's a good one, and Marky Mark is in it, so it should be pretty interesting. It's dark, but I don't think that it's as crazy whacked out as Almost Moon. Interest??

Can't wait to see you all next Friday. I've got the mother in law here for the next week. Have a great weekend all.. wait, it's only Wednesday. Agh... Back to watching SYTYCD Canada. I'm praying that Christine shows up on one of these auditions...

Hello ladies!
I am back from two weeks in the BC sunshine and late on our August book! I imagine this is probably fine with most as the July book was a tough one. I found after struggling through the first half I really enjoyed the second half and, while not on my list of favourites, it is a book that I will remember and am glad to have read.

On to our August book, Cease to Blush. Will Amber pull out another fab pick that all of us will love? I hope so! I started last night and love that I don't know anything about the plot. I'll leave it like that for all of you too, and only post the author's web page on the side bar.

I'm about half way through Poisonwood Bible and have started to question the story. I spent a bit of this morning doing some research on the history. The Democratic Republic of Congo (which from what I understand is what it was named after the independence) is smack in the centre of Africa. They've been faced with, what BBC news calls, Africa's world war lasting well over 5 years and claiming 3 million lives.

What was shocking to me is that this war was current news on January 28, 2009. I will be the first to admit that I tend to stay away from the news as I feel that it is negative energy; however I am ashamed to admit that I didn't know.

We spend so much energy, money and resources reporting one life lost (MJ) that I cringe. To think what that same dollar value could have done for these people outrages me.

It's not our war to fight? Maybe. I believe that we aren't responsible in supporting war but ensuring safety and well being for the innocent.

I have new found respect for this book and can't wait to dive in for the second half. I'm sure that my research will certainly help me finish in record time. That or the sheer boredom of fishing on Sunday will do it.

So, Christien started reading Bright Shiny Mornings, and he would like to add to our discussion of Amberton. He believes that it is Tom Cruise. I have to side with him on this one. It makes total sense, when he was with Nicole Kidman. 2 kids, boy and girl. Worked with his wife on movies (or at least one movie). Was a heart throb back in the day. Definitly thinks that he is gods gift to life. I couldn't get behind it being Will Smith for the fact that he's not a whiny cry baby like Amberton turned into. Now Tom Cruise, I would see whailing around and whimping out if another dude wasn't in love with him. Hello, he is the GMD.

Hello!
Thanks for a great Tuesday Book Club, Malia! As always food and conversation were both delicious. I forgot to take a copy of the hardcover "Thanks" page, but will get to that tonight if I can remember. BSM seems to be the Book of the Year!

Officially moving on to July book now...I am sitting here at my desk reading TPB and my first impression is that it is going to be chock full of funny phrases. This is my current favourite from the chapter I just read...

"He was getting that look he gets, oh boy, like Here come Moses tromping down off of Mount Syanide with ten fresh ways to wreck your life."

I makes me laugh because Montana is full of Baptists and Evangelicals and every where you go you see these 10 Commandment Billboards. Just 4.5 hours south of here, but something you'd just never see on our roads.

Book Club Tuesday!

Hey hey ladies! Book club time again. Super sweet. My place, 6:30pm on Tuesday the 7th. I know that they are calling for rain, so keep the fingers crossed that the sun shines through and we can spend the evening on the deck. The newly painted deck, I hope. I will be cleaning like crazy this weekend to kitty proof the house in case we are pushed back inside. Nothing like a good excuse to get as far away from Stampede as possible. And to get together and discuss a book that sounds like we've almost all read! I'm going with a vegetarian theme this time. We'll see how that works out.

On another note, Three Cups of Tea is on sale at Costco for $10 and it's in paperback. Just for any of you who haven't purchased it yet.

I finished our book on the weekend. My favourite character, if I HAD to choose one, would be Lemonade.

I loved all the stories! I'm the same as Candice and admit to also skipping most of the LA Fun Facts and at one point reading ahead to find out what happened in one of the story lines I just couldn't wait for.

Thanks Amba for a superb pick. It's officially one of my favourite books.

Happy Canada Day Weeks

I wasn't sure how else to title this one because our Canada Day plans are pretty scattered both time and local wise...
The holidays start for those lucky Kelowna girls on Friday, there is sun sun sun in the forecast for you!
They don't start for me until Tuesday I head to Montana.
Luckiest of all Shannon starts her holiday this Saturday to LONDON and PARIS! She returns on the 6th...the day before her BIRTHDAY and book club. Let's all persuade Shannon to come have cake and wine with us, even though Ryan will probably be anxious to spoil her that day, but as always, no pressure!

I've got a time consuming project I'm creating for my new neice Elyssa Mary. They changed the spelling, it's better than Elisa, non? Anyway, this project has taken away my evening reading time so I'm slow on BSM...though thouroughly enjoying every chapter. The gang chapter was SHOCKING to me. The violence in L.A is like Calgary times 1000, literally. Not to mention the traffic! Disgusting! I feel so, so fortunate to live in this city. Ocean or no ocean. Super excited for Poisionwood Bible too! Loving the picks Ladies. Loving.

Hope wherever and whenever you take your holiday that it some time finds you in the warmth of the sun enjoying a good book!

Nothing more in this post than a few random observations I've picked up recently and would like to share.

First...HUGE disappointing news reading this blog's first review of Time Travellers Wife Movie. A book I loved so, so much. I don't know that I could watch the destruction of a book I loved so much.

Then...another Book to movie adaptation coming of a book that Kristin noted as a want-to-read on this post. The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. I will Feature Friday that one soon because I'd like to know what it's about.

Also...this blog that I read often (and spoke of at last book club) will melt your heart. He announced yesterday that it is going to be published as a book. I would not be surprised if, it too, went to movie. If Marley & Me could do it...Maddy and Me can.

Lastly...

July Book Meet

Ladies...

I know it might seem early, but with our busy summer schedules on the horizon, I thought that I would try to book a book club for July before that gets nixed. How about my deck (so the sisters don't get allergic) on July 3rd? Is that a portion of the long weekend? I'm confused because Canada day is in the middle of the week. However, I am not going anywhere for the long weekend, so that date still stands if you guys can make it. If not, then I am more then willing to host the following week, say on a Tuesday so as to not interfere with soccer or golf. It's too bad that not enough of us had read Edgar Sawtell cause I really enjoyed it and was looking forward to chatting a bit more about it. Maybe with the sunny weather, and the lure to get outside and read will have more peeps reading Amber's pick this month. I started the other day, and it's pretty good so far.

Don't forget about the Patio Party on the 11th!

I'm happy to say this is our 100th POST! Bright Shiny Morning is also our 20th book together. Wow! Candice's post about the Bucket List made me think how our Book Club and how reading so many new and interesting books is helping in the completion of one Bucket item for me. So how 'bout it? 2.5 hours from a sunny weekend. What are you all up to? What are you reading? I finished Edgar Sawtelle last night. I must confess to some "skimming" of the last 100 pages. It was a long one. Looking forward to your reviews.

I guess we should start thinking about a June meeting. Where did the month go...seriously. Candice, still up for hosting?

So for Feature Friday I had a hard time coming up with a new book! How odd. I skimmed the New York Times Best Seller List and didn't come up with much. Not interested in Hard Cover...though our Chuck Palahniuk's Pygmy sits at #3.

I picked up Twilight again at lunch and read two paragraphs before throwing it across my office. I just don't get the hype. It is highly unusual for me not to finish a book, but I can't waste any more time on it. I listed it on our bulletin board at work

Hey Ladies,
Fun book club at the Diner last week! We missed Jasmine...I think the consensus on A Wolf at the Table was that there was a direct relationship between liking the book and beleiving the author. Those that were genuinely afraid for that little boy liked it, and those that thought it was a "tall tale" didn't think it was so great. Definitley an interesting read by a new and different author and for that, I liked it a lot!

Two books were recommended to me by an avid reader friend (who's top 10 list is very similar to mine), they are The Power of One and Tandia. The Power of One is not a self-help like it sounds. Here is the review from Chapters...

Feature Friday!! The Disappeared

Hello Ladies!
Spring has arrived! What are you all up to this weekend? I am throwing open the windows and starting some spring cleaning. After a long winter our old house just smells...old. I also have about 100 windows to clean. Spring clean up the yard. Dust off the patio chairs and sink into Edgar Sawtelle in the +17 sunshine. I made the mistake of clicking on the link on the side bar - the Reading Group Guide. This book goes where I never expected it would. It totally revealed the story line so I do NOT recommend reading it unless you like that kinda thing.

I've got Edgar Sawtelle going in the evening at home and Twilight going at my desk at lunch...okay and I read a bit when I'm supposed to be working too. I was going to dive into another Phillipa Gregory (The Virgin's Lover) as soon as I was done, but this book, The Disappeared, has caught my attention. I LOVE historical fiction and I LOVE a love story. This book blends the two. Maybe I'll save it for a pick for next year, if I can wait that long. BD thinks that we should only pick books for Book Club that we have already read. What do you gals think of that format? The month where everyone is reading your book, you would have to read another one of your choosing.

A Beautiful Blending of Truth and Fiction
I have often noted in my reviews that I love great historical fiction. The stories can cover a brief moment or grand sweep of time. It is simply that beautiful blending of truth and fiction that always seems to strike a chord. The Disappeared by Kim Echlin is one such story. The book centers on a single love story, the intense romance between Anne and Serey and is set against one of the most tormented moments in human history: Cambodia under the reign of Pol Pot.

Anne is a high school senior when she falls in love with the slightly older and exotically charismatic Serey who is in exile from his beautiful Cambodia. Hello ladies!
It's been a while since I posted. I've been busy ya know. Weddings and such. That is all over now and I'm ready to get back into a more regular existance on weekends. Which includes movies! And books! And speaking of the two I happened to watch Twilight on Friday night. I have to say it left me with two thoughts...I wonder what the hype is all about...and I have to read the book to find out! Has anyone else read or watched Twilight?

We've got a full week ahead of pretty crappy weather so lots of reading should get done. You have to look on the bright side, ya know?

I'm excited that I may have a new book for my list of favourites. I am loving Edgar Sawtelle...the setting, the atmosphere, the characters and conflicts, and the style of writing. Once it's officially "May", I'll add lots of links for Sawtelle. Love her or hate her, the Almighty Opes will have a lot of good material on this book I think.

Shall we say 7:00 at Diner Deluxe on Friday May 8? I'll call ahead to be sure we can reserve a table for 8. I'll keep you posted...

p.s. Unrelated material...I am blogging from the couch tonight, while watching a Canadian Geographic special on the Canadian Beaver. Cute lil buggers. Did you know there used to be a Giant beaver the size of a black bear that went extinct 10,000 years ago? True story. You can Google that shiz. Hmmm wonder if my next book pick could have something to do with the Giant Bever or life on Ellsmere Island.

Just found out that it's coming out in paperback in May. The 6th or the 12th. So for those of you who haven't bought it yet, or enjoy paperbacks more then hardcover, it'll be out soon. Hello ladies...Sawadee Ka Kristin!

Hope you are enjoying Thailand and staying away from political uprisings! I was quite concerned by the images on the TV until BD explained it to me this way..."It's kinda like Stampede Week in Calgary, if you stay away from it, you'd never know it was happening." Hopefully you are reaching new levels of tan on the powder sand beaches drinking out of a bucket.

What are your thoughts on our current book? I got stalled on Chapter 7 but I am hoping to get back into it this week...planning a weekend away, taxes, birthdays, weddings, spring cleaning and errands have all got me distracted!

Next meeting is still up for debate as to the where & when...but we do know it's out on the town. Thoughts? Suggestions? Keep me posted.

Hey Gals...

BIG thanks to Alana for the Meatatarian-Movie Book Club! Food was super fab (sad again I didn't bring camera for visual documentation - next time it is a must). The movie brought mixed reviews, am I right? It followed the book, yes...but if you hadn't read the book I'm sure that you would think it the weirdest, most crazy ass movie you'd ever seen. Rocks? Death by Chocolate Pudding? Cherry Daquiri? WTF.

Overall thoughts on the book were mixed...like what can you make of it? However, based on the fact that we all read and finished reading it...I'd say it was a success! Great pick KD! We missed you KD as we ate our kebabs!

I was reflecting on our fabulous book club and how the best part of meeting monthly is to witness the changing of the tides, so to speak. One month is the perfect increment it seems to always have some big and fabulous news. Since the inception of our book club we have done the following (in no particular order)...

Another Month, Another Book

Friends,
We meet tomorrow, Friday the 3rd, at Alana's. This is the third consecutive Book Club on the first Friday of the month! We are getting some consistency in our meetings, which is awesome. Looking forward to your thoughts on Choke...and to starting Wolf.

I've got a few links to A Wolf at the Table and Augusten Burroughs on the side bar. I love that name. I don't have much experience with this author other than seeing the movie Running With Scissors. Has anyone else seen that or read the book? I remember thinking it was a pretty good movie at the time. Apparently A Wolf at the Table is about the time period in his life before Running With Scissors, when he goes to live with his mother's shrink!? WTF. It's so crazy.

Also I just finished The Queen's Fool, another Phillipa Gregory. It's pretty good if you are at all interested in the relationship of Elizabeth I and her half-sister Mary and how Elizabeth came to be Queen.

Has any one else been doing any extracurricular reading you'd recommend??

I'd say the one downside to ordering a years worth of books at a time is I don't get into Chapters to see what's on the shelves much...but that does save me probabably a lot of money.

BD is reading Angels and Demons right now. I quite liked it, almost better than DaVinci code. This movie comes out next month and we plan to see it...any one up for making that one a double, triple, quadruple...(I don't know what comes next) date? Let's make it happen.

So much to discuss...till tomorrow...

Reading on the Beach

I've got most of my stuff packed, including Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts and Wolf at the Table. Not sure how much reading will actually get done, as Kyle is a wee bit of a chatterbox. But a guy can't talk for 28 days straight can he? I guess we'll see. Pretty nervous - not so much about the travelling - more about the making sure we travel well together and will still like each other at the end. I'm sure it will be fine but sometimes it feels like a big risk to take so early into our relationship, because he is just THAT amazing I want him in my life for good. Truly.

Anyway, I really just wanted to say that I love you all and am excited to share my adventure with you when I am back. We are an awesome bunch aren't we? Have a great April!

PS - Please give me some sort of update/what happened/who hated it/who loved it- for the Choke meeting. I am sad that I am missing it.

Friends!
Finally getting some Choke pages up on the side bar. I read the entire second chapter with my mouth agape. Wow. This is definitley no Mommy Tale...no Mommy Tale at all. Mommy Issues maybe... So I've saved it for my 9 hours on the plane because I think it will be hard to look away from it!!
Hope you all have a fabulous couple of weeks until we meet again. Choke the movie is available on DVD now and perhaps should be involved in our next meeting, non?

Hey All,
Thanks KD for a fab book club on Friday! Sushi was delish and the lasagna...don't forget I need the recipe Ambs. Jasmine and Alana were missed and didn't get to see the Fashion Show! which of course was fun and had fabulous results! Thanks again ladies for all the great choices. You have saved me time and money scouring Market Mall Tuesday night before we leave for something (anything!) to wear to this wedding. Those impulse buys are never the best.

Book Club night quickly approaches! Can you believe it's March!?!? I love, love, the slushy mess downtown today. It just feels like Winter's ending!! Bring on the rains baby.

Further to my last post, I have no self-control and indulged SO much in red wine with Alana after the Flames game that not only did I drag her on stage to sing "Brown Eyed Girl" at Ducky's, but I had the worst, WORST, hangover of my life for the following two days. So on Monday I gave up alcohol for Orthoodx Lent, not that I'm catholic or anything, but hey... it works because I won't have to fight the flow of the Mormon family vacation, and my 40 dry days will end April 8 (Passover) and our flight to Vegas Baby!!! (You all should come too by the way)

As for all the potential Drop-Outs and non-readers...life sometimes doesn't allow for a lot of free time to read and there are too many fab books out there to read something you are not interested in. So let's not assume that we are all going to read all the books or come to all the meetings every month. I think the point is to get together 12 times a year with fun ladies to enjoy good food and conversation about books (in general) and life (in general). This is a low pressure Book Club...am I right!?!

As you may or may not know, I am going on a holiday in 3 weeks and 3 days. You must know because it's probably all I talk about, sorry...it'll be over soon. Anyway, you also may or may not know that my bro-in-law is getting married there and that involves family pictures that will forever be cemented in a 2009 Dunham Family Memories Book. That brings a few thoughts to mind...

I need a new dress.
It's a recession.

Do you have a fab dress that you are willing to borrow or share? Perhaps you paid a bit too much for and feel a little guilty that it's beauty is just hanging there for no one to see? Beauty that could be forever cemented in a 2009 Dunham Family Memories Book? Bring the garment to Kristin's on March 6! I will be forever grateful to not add one more thing to the list of purchase items for this vacay. I swear I spend more on outfits, suntan lotion, and books than I do on the price of the flight.
Also, it's a dry wedding so there is a No-Get-Sloppy-Drunk-and-spill-on-it-while-doing-the-cha-cha-Guarantee!!!

Inside Out Girl

Hello...
How was everyone's long weekend? I have to say I did not get a lot of reading accomplished this weekend, but that is to be expected with a whole lot of children under the same roof. The drive home, however, proved much more productive on the reading front especially with a 2 hour delay at the border. Brutal.

So who is reading our current book? Who isn't? What does everyone think? I have to say that it is easy reading, but there is not a whole heck of a lot going on for me. I'm not quite finished so I'll hold my opinions until next meeting.

March 6 at KD's pad seems to work for everyone so far...keep it open!

Book Club Recap

Hello all...
Big thanks to Amber for Bollywood Book Club and the super delicious meal! I was going to try to recreate it for a Valentines Day meal for me and BD at the cabin in Montana this weekend, but alas, it will be a full house with 12 other family members joining us. Also, I don't think there is one Indian Restaurant in all of Montana to get some naan bread from, and it just couldn't be as good as Bubly's. Too bad we didn't have more success with The Thirteenth Tale but I think those of you that didn't read it got some pretty good reviews as incentive to!
I started Inside Out Girl on the weekend and hope to make some major progress this long weekend...there is no cable or internet at the cabin. That has been my major distraction lately, that darned laptop at home.
I am already looking forward to the next meeting...did we discuss it at Kristin's or did I make that up?

My favourite week of the month! Book Club week! This Friday - February 6 at Ambuh's place.
It has been a while hasn't it? Our attempts at informal book discussion at January parties was pretty unsuccessful. I have to say that BD thoroughly enjoys the company of all the Book Club husbands and fiances, which has made explaining plans I've made for us so much easier.

C - "We are going to ____ (insert event) this weekend."
BD - "What? You never told me that."
C - "Yes. I did. Twice."
BD - "Well...who's going to be there?"
C - "Book Club"
BD - "Sweet."

End of Discussion. It's SO nice!!

Hey all...just a cold and grey January afternoon post. Not much to it and some of you other Lainey readers will already have picked up on the tidbit I am about to share. Do any of you read GOOP? Gwyneth Paltrow's newsletter? On this particular one here she lists her and her friends favourite books. Madonna lists The Time Travellers Wife as one of her faves and I love that she is the only one on the list who doesn't list only "Classics". Yep, Love in the Time of Cholera is on there, and it makes me wonder who are these people who enjoy this book and did they actually read it or are just trying to sound smart?

Well 2009 continues to surprise. I'm really learning to roll with the punches...how quickly life changes.

I need some updates! How does everyone like The Thirteenth Tale? I really enjoyed it!

What is everyone reading beyond our January book? I have been reading The Gurensey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It's cute, I like it...but I have been losing my focus. I am glad I chose 13th Tale over it for my book club selection. If I can get through it in the next week or so I am going to start The Queen's Fool (Thanks Shannon)...the 4th book in the Boleyn Girl series. Look at me reading a whole series! Look out Harry Potter...you may be next.

Life...or something like it

That line describes my holiday to a tee. 10 days of busy family visiting pondering how we lived under one roof for 19 years of my existence, with no releif provided by "holiday cheer". That was compounded by a sickness with no releif from Dayquil or anything of the sort. It was a rough go. The following week I hibernated, sleeping 16 hours a day with the help of the -27 temperatures EVERY DAY. How depressing was that, and that we come back to work on the nicest day we've had in a month. It's so unfair.
BD and I have two conclusions from this holiday. 1 - We are never hosting Christmas again (at least for 2-3 years when the memory is gone) and 2 - We are always booking a flight to a tropical place on December 26 to unwind through the New Year. I so hope we stick to #2.
Anyhoo...looking forward to hearing similar stories from all of y'all. Even the tanned Hawaii gals did not escape the parental units even in paradise.

Can everyone get together on Thursday the 8th? I am reserving Wednesday the 7th - the giant 3-0 birthday for a little dinner celebration with BD.

I just found this on Wikipedia under Vedran Smailović - the Cellist of Sarajevo - and found it interesting...

"Canadian author Steven Galloway used Smajlović's act as the basis for his bestselling 2008 novel, The Cellist of Sarajevo. He did so without consultation with Smajlović, and the Canadian edition uses his picture on the cover. Although he only appears as a peripheral character in the novel, Smajlović has publicly expressed his outrage over the publication of the book."

I can see if he changed his name, even using him as a peripheral character, but to put his picture on the cover without consent? I wonder if he's sueing.

A Classic Christmas Book Exchange

Big Up to Shannon on a fab meeting at the cute condo on Friday! Pizza and cupcakes simply MUST be done more often.

Can you beleive it's November 20 tomorrow? Already. Here I was wishing away October and November is moving at the speed of light. So fast that Superstore is playing Christmas music already! Just as I was starting to enjoy shopping there, they blast me with Nick and Jessica's rendition of "It's Cold Outside" upon walking through those automatic doors.
